Garden FAQs
If I want to grow some food-producing plants, do I have to have a large garden?
No! One of the great things about gardening is that it can be done almost anywhere. If you don’t have a lot of room for growing, you can just pick a few plants you want to grow and start small. Herbs are great if you are really short on space, and can only have a few small pots or a window-box. If you have a small piece of ground you can use, squash, peppers and tomatoes are great choices for growing. You don’t have to use a lot of space to enjoy growing things.
What kinds of pots are best to use for growing plants?
If you are just growing flowers, any type of pot will work as long as you don’t overwater it. For edible plants many people prefer clay and terra cotta. Some other pots such as plastic can have harmful chemicals in them that can leach into the soil over time and be absorbed by the plant. You don’t want to be ingesting these chemicals through the food you grow.
Are there plants that I shouldn’t put in my garden?
For the most part, whether or not a plant should go in your garden is up to you. Some plants can cause problems for those around them, so you may want to research everything you are planting to make sure it isn’t going to affect its neighbors. But plants like mint should be confined to a pot. Some plants are great to have around, but they grow exponentially, and come back every year. These can quickly make a nuisance of themselves. Reading up on a plant’s growing pattern is a great way to avoid this.
